Ramanatha swamy temple stands at the heart of Rameswaram. This temple it self is a delight for every tourist with its magnificent strcture, long corridors. The temple is dedicated to Lord shiva. It also boasts of being one of the 12 jyotirlinga temples of India.
History: According to a popular legend lord Rama installed this linga here. When he was on his way to attack Ravana, he reached this place where he made a linga of sand and worshipped it. Lord Shiva blessed him. He requested Shiva to reside here eternally for the the benefit of mankind. Shiva then manifested himself as the linga and was installed there.
Architecture: The temple has been built using the Dravidian architecture, which stand within a complex surrounded by a high compound wall The temple boasts of striking long corridors inside that are 5ft high. The sanctum of the temple consists of two lingams one that was built with sand known as Ramalingam. And another was brought from kailash by Hanuman known as Vishwalingam. The beams and pillars of the second corridor were made using sand stone. The 3rd corridor, also known as Chokkatan Mandapambis the largest corridor in the world with 1212 pillars-each pillar measuring 30ft.
There are two gate tower one located in east and other one located in West . East one is 78ft high and west one is 126ft high. The temple was reconstructed by granite there are intricate carvings on each pillars of the temple. The statue of Nandi measures 17ft high and 12ft wide. The total length of the corridors in 3850ft.

How to reach:
By air : The nearest is at Madurai, about 174km from Rameswaram, The airport is well connected by flights to many India citites like Chennai, Trichy, Bengalore and Mumbai.
By train: The Rameshwaram railway station is directly connected via rail to all major stations of Coimbatore, Trichy, Madurai, Thanjavur and chennai.
Timing: All day 5am to 1pm and then 3pm 9pm
