History:
This temple was built by Narasinghadeva in 1250AD to commemorate his victory over muslims.The name Konark comes from the combination of Sanskrit words Kona ( corner) and Ark ( The Sun). It is shaped like a big chariot represnting the Sun God's chariot.
Architecture:
The temple is known for it's stone carvings that cover the enient structure. The Sun God's chariot has 24 wheels and is pulled by seven horses which represent seven weeks. It is called Black Pagoda due to it's dark colour and it's magnetic power that drew ships into the shore and caused shipwrecks. The temple is built with such a fine slant towards the east that the first ray of the rising sun illuminate the main entrance. Three kind of stones used in it's construction namely chlorite, laterite & khondalite. It has height of 100 feet approx. adorned with exquisite stone carvings all over. This sanctum is celebrated for it's intricate art work themes that include erotic depictions as well much like Khajuraho Temple in Madhyapradesh.
