On the way from Bhubaneswar to Puri, one finds Shanti Stupa. The word 'Shanti' means 'Peace' and 'Stupa' means 'Pagoda'. Dhauli is famous for the edicts related to Buddhism.

History:
The peace pagoda or Dhauli Shanti Stupa is constructed at the top of the Dhauli hills in 1970s by the Japan Buddha Sangha and the Kalinga Nippon Buddha Sangha.
The King Ashoka laid the foundation of peace person. It was built through Indo-Japanese collaboration , constructed by the cheif priest of Nipponzan Myohoji who came India in 1930. An enormous battles that were fought here, the Kalinga war of 261B.C.
For which Dhauli is so well known played a crucial role in transforming King Ashoka to a die-hard Buddha devotee. In that war the Daya river is said to have turned red with the blood of many deceased after the battle. Ashoka realize the horror associated with the war. Then he followed the preaching of Buddha for the rest of his life. He built several stupas, chaityas, & pillars there.

Architecture: 
The overall structure of the Stupa is in the shape of adome. One can spot the Buddha foot prints as well as bodhi tree over the stone panels. The temple is famous for the edicts and related to Buddhism that were composed from the brahmi script & used prakrit language. One can find the image of intricately carved elephant, close to this elephant you have a Stupa. In addition to this you have the Dhavaleswar temple, Bahirangeswar temple, Shiva temple that together add to the religious aspect to this place.

How to reach:
By air: The nearest airport is the Biju patnaik International Airport which situated just 13km away.
By train: The nearest railway station is Bhubaneswar railway station. From the station you can hire a taxi or cab.
Timings: Sunday to saturday - 6am.to 6pm.
Light and sound show timings are 6pm. & 6.45 pm. On all days except Monday.
